Seeding Along the Wolf River Side of Memphis
Hydroseeding in Cordova covers everything from new construction along Houston Levee Road to older lots near the original village on Macon Road. Cordova is loosely bounded by the Wolf River on the south, and parts of Shelby Farms Park are counted as Cordova. Land that slopes toward the river corridor and its wetlands needs extra care, because whatever soil leaves a yard ends up in that water.
Close to the river and the park
Shelby Farms covers about 4,500 acres, with lakes, natural forest and the wetlands of the Wolf River set among hilly ground. Lots near the park and the river corridor can have more grade change than the flatter parts of the county. For those we pair the seed with erosion control blankets or a heavy hydromulch, and keep a silt fence along the low edge until the grass is up.
Where growth is happening
Cordova went from a farm hamlet of about 150 people in 1912 to roughly 68,779 people in 2020. Most current growth is along Houston Levee Road and Macon Road, plus commercial sites on Germantown Parkway. New homes there need lawn installation on freshly graded lots, and commercial pads need fast cover to meet stormwater expectations during construction.
Old farm soils
Cordova was known for fresh-cut flowers shipped to Memphis; its motto was 'Farms, Flowers and Fellowship.' Former farm ground can be good for grass once construction compaction is broken up. We rip or till compacted areas, add topsoil where it was stripped, then hydroseed.
Along the Greenline
The Shelby Farms Greenline was extended to the old Cordova rail station in 2016. Yards that back up to trail corridors often have drainage swales that benefit from a quick, even cover.

Cordova Questions
My Cordova backyard slopes toward the Wolf River bottoms. What do you recommend?
Seed covered by an erosion blanket or a sprayed bonded fiber matrix across the slope, and a sediment barrier at the bottom until grass covers the ground.
Do you seed new construction lots off Houston Levee Road?
Yes, for builders and owners. We can handle final grade, topsoil and the hydroseed lawn in one visit when the lot is ready.
Is the soil here good for grass?
Much of it was farmland, which helps, but construction often compacts it. Loosening the soil before seeding makes a big difference.
Can you seed a commercial pad on Germantown Parkway?
Yes. Commercial and construction hydroseeding is a regular part of our work, including temporary cover on pads waiting to be built.
