Hydroseeding in Marion, AR

Two kinds of river land meet under one Crittenden County town.

  • We walk every site before quoting, and the quote comes in writing
  • Grass picked for how much sun, shade and season your yard actually gets
  • A watering plan left with every new lawn

Two Ecoregions, Two Kinds of Yard

Hydroseeding in Marion depends partly on which side of town you are on. Marion sits on the line between two ecoregions of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain: the Northern Backswamps in west Marion and the Northern Holocene Meander Belts in east Marion. Much of the original wetland and river habitat in both has been drained and developed for farms and towns, but the land still remembers what it was.

West side: former backswamp

The Northern Backswamps are low overflow areas and floodplains that once held bald cypress, water tupelo and overcup oak forest, flooded for part or all of the year. Yards built on that kind of ground are often heavy and slow to drain. We focus on getting a positive grade, loosening the soil and sometimes adding topsoil to raise low spots before seeding.

East side: old river channels

The Northern Holocene Meander Belts are flat floodplains and old alignments of the Mississippi, with natural levees, oxbow lakes and point bars. Soils on old point bars and levees can be lighter and drain better than backswamp ground. Those lots usually need less drainage work but more attention to watering a new hydroseed lawn in summer.

Wetland next door

The Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge, about 10 miles north, still preserves flooded bald cypress forest typical of the area before row agriculture. It is a reminder that water drains slowly here. Ditches and swales around new homes deserve erosion control blankets or heavy mulch, not bare dirt.

Industrial growth

Union Pacific runs a 600-acre intermodal facility west of Marion and BNSF also has a yard in town. Big freight and logistics sites need silt fence and commercial hydroseeding as they build out.

  • Drained land. Much of the original wetland and riverine habitat has been drained and developed for agriculture or towns.
  • Wapanocca refuge. Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge, about 10 miles north, preserves year-round flooded bald cypress forest.

Marion Questions

Why does one side of Marion drain better than the other?

West Marion lies on former backswamp ground that tends to be heavy and wet; east Marion lies on old river meander land where some soils drain better.

Can you seed the ditch along my road frontage?

Yes. Ditches get a heavier hydromulch or blankets so the seed stays in place while water runs.

Do you seed commercial and logistics sites near the intermodal yards?

Yes, along with silt fence installation and sediment control during construction.

Which part of the year suits seeding a Marion lawn?

Warm-season grasses go in late spring to early summer; fescue for shaded areas goes in during early fall.
