Seeding Near the Upper Loosahatchie
Hydroseeding in Somerville often means working close to river land. The Loosahatchie River runs past the northern end of the town on its way west to the Mississippi, and Interstate 40 crosses it west of Somerville in the only unchannelized stretch of its middle course. Most of the rest of the river and its major tributaries were straightened for agriculture. Fast, straight channels move soil quickly, so bare banks and yards near the river or its feeder ditches need to be covered promptly.
Banks and bottoms
For properties that slope toward the river bottoms or drainage ditches, we pair hydroseeding with straw erosion control blankets on the steepest sections and a silt fence along the low edge until grass has filled in. Where a bank is very steep or keeps eroding, slope stabilization may call for more than seed.
Small town, older lots
Somerville was incorporated in 1836 and had 3,415 residents in 2020. Many lots are older, with established trees and lawns that thin over time. We overseed or renovate those, matching seed blends to sun and shade.
Higher ground in town
The town sits at about 397 feet, higher than Memphis. Yards on rolling ground in town drain better than river bottoms but still need attention to slope when regraded.
Rural edges
Around Somerville, many homes sit on country lots next to pasture and woods. We seed new homesites, driveway shoulders and pasture edges, and can use a lower-maintenance mix away from the house.
