From Builder Dirt to a Lawn You Can Mow
Residential lawn hydroseeding in Memphis is how most people turn a bare new-construction yard, or a lawn torn up by drainage work, into grass without paying for sod. After the ground is prepped, our hose lays down a mix of seed, starter fertilizer, wood fiber mulch and tackifier that sticks where it lands. The result is an even, green-tinted mat across the yard the same afternoon, with seed sitting in moist mulch instead of loose on top of the dirt. It is new lawn installation for homeowners who want a real lawn and a sensible budget.
Who usually calls us
- New-home buyers whose builder left straw, a thin seed scatter, or nothing at all on the yard
- Homeowners after a sewer, water line, French drain or pool project left a strip of bare dirt
- People who killed off a weedy, patchy lawn and want to start over
- Owners of rental and flip houses who need a yard covered before listing
- Anyone with a lawn too big to sod affordably
Why a hydroseed lawn suits local soil
Around Memphis the yard soil is mostly loess-derived silt loam. It holds water and nutrients well, which is good for grass, but bare silt crusts over after rain and washes downhill quickly. Dry seed thrown on that crust tends to wash into the low corners or get eaten. Hydroseeding puts the seed inside a mulch blanket that keeps the surface from crusting and holds moisture around the seed through hot afternoons. For grass seeding on anything larger than a small patch, that difference shows up in the first month.
Picking the grass
This is the part we spend the most time on with homeowners, because Memphis sits in the transition zone. Bermudagrass is the workhorse for full sun: it takes heat, recovers from wear and spreads fast, but it thins out in shade and goes tan after the first hard frost. Zoysia is denser, slower to fill in and handles some shade. Tall fescue keeps its color through most months and does better under the oaks and maples of older neighborhoods, but it struggles in hot, open yards in July and August. Many lots have both conditions, so we often spray a sun mix in the open areas and a fescue mix under the trees.
Timing
University of Tennessee Extension guidance puts warm-season grasses in the ground between May 1 and June 30 and cool-season grasses between late August and mid-October. In practice we schedule bermuda and zoysia lawns from May into early summer, and fescue lawns from late August through the first half of October. If your house closes in November or February, we can spray a mulch-heavy mix or a temporary cover grass to stop erosion, then seed the permanent lawn in the next window.
Hydroseeding cost
National guides put residential hydroseeding cost between about $0.07 and $0.35 per square foot, with each guide landing somewhere in that spread, which works out to a few hundred dollars for a small yard and a few thousand for a large lot. Most companies, including us, have a minimum job charge because the truck, water and setup cost the same whether we spray 1,000 square feet or 5,000. Slopes, removing debris, adding topsoil and fine grading all add to the job. The table below lists published ranges; the quote we put in writing after seeing the yard is the real number.
Prep makes or breaks it
We do not spray onto builder rubble. Before seeding we pick up rock, concrete and wood scraps, break up hard-packed spots, fill ruts and washouts, and shape the yard so rain drains off toward the edges rather than back against the foundation. Where the yard is mostly bare subsoil, we bring in topsoil. On loess that has been scraped and compacted by equipment, loosening the top few inches does as much as any fertilizer.
After we leave
Water is everything for the first three weeks. In hot spells that means brief, gentle sprinkler runs several times between morning and late afternoon, enough to keep the mulch dark and damp but not puddled. Under good conditions you will see grass in about 5 to 7 days and mow for the first time at around four to six weeks, with the mower set high. Bermuda lawns sown in late spring will usually knit together by late summer; fescue sown in fall fills in through the cool months and is thickest the following spring. We leave a written plan with the schedule for your grass type.
Hydroseed versus sod on a new lot
Sod makes sense for a small front yard you need green this week, but national guides list it at $1 to $4 a square foot once laid, so it gets expensive fast on a half-acre lot. A hydroseed lawn costs a fraction of that, roots straight into your own soil instead of a thin layer grown elsewhere, and lets you pick the exact grass for each part of the yard. The trade-off is time: plan on about a season before it looks finished.

Residential Lawn Hydroseeding Questions
What does a hydroseeded yard run in Memphis?
National guides publish a spread of roughly 7 to 35 cents per square foot, and a minimum job fee commonly falls in the $300 to $500 range. A typical new-home lot lands somewhere in the low thousands depending on size and prep. We put a written quote in your hands after seeing the yard.
Can you hydroseed bermuda grass?
Yes. Bermuda is a standard choice for sunny lawns here. It needs warm soil, so we schedule it from May into early summer.
What watering schedule does a freshly sprayed Memphis lawn need?
While the weather is hot, plan on several short, light waterings daily through roughly the first three weeks, just enough that the mulch never dries out. As the grass fills in, water less often but more deeply.
Will a hydroseed lawn grow under my big oak trees?
Bermuda will not do well in heavy shade. We use tall fescue or a shade blend under trees and seed it in the early fall window so it can root before summer.
Why is my mulch green?
The wood fiber mulch carries a green dye so the crew can see even coverage while spraying. It fades over a few days as the grass starts to come up.
