Seeding Ground the River Once Shaped
Hydroseeding in Horn Lake begins with understanding how flat and low the ground can be. The city takes its name from an oxbow lake about three miles west, a former bed of the Mississippi River left behind when the river changed course in the late 18th century, in a shape like a cow's horn. Horn Lake sits at about 305 feet, and about 1.8 percent of its area is water. Land shaped by an old river tends to drain slowly, and that affects how a new lawn is graded.
Getting water off flat yards
On very flat lots, a lawn can look fine until a heavy rain leaves puddles that sit for days and drown the new seedlings. Before seeding we set a gentle slope away from the house, fill low spots with topsoil and, where needed, shape a shallow swale. If a yard needs more, our grading crews also do the excavation and trenching for a drain line.
DeSoto Village and the first big build-out
In 1970 First Mississippi Corporation began developing about 960 acres as a planned neighborhood called DeSoto Village, and the community finally incorporated in 1973. Many homes from that era have lawns that are 50 years old, often with thinning turf, shade from mature trees and settled spots. Lawn renovation and overseeding are common requests.
Western annexation
In 2001 Horn Lake annexed several square miles and about 6,000 people to the west. Those areas mix older rural homes and newer lots, many with larger yards suited to hydroseeding rather than sod.

Horn Lake Questions
Why does my Horn Lake yard stay soggy after rain?
Very flat lots often lack enough slope to shed water. A little regrading and topsoil in low spots usually fixes it before reseeding.
My lawn is from the 1970s and mostly weeds. Should I start over?
Usually a full renovation with hydroseeding works better than overseeding when weeds have taken over most of the lawn.
Can you seed a drainage ditch bank behind my house?
Yes, with blankets or a heavier mulch so the next storm does not wash the seed out.
Do you serve the western annexed areas?
Yes. All of Horn Lake is in our service area.
