Renewing Yards in a Suburb That Started Small
Hydroseeding in Southaven means working two different generations of yards. The city began with Kemmons Wilson's subdivisions of small starter homes just across the state line from Whitehaven, and it has since become Memphis's largest suburb, with 54,648 people in 2020 and an estimated 57,493 in 2024. In 20 years it doubled its land area while its population tripled. Older neighborhoods need lawn renovation; newer edges need lawn installation from bare dirt.
Older yards: renovation
Yards in the first subdivisions have had decades of foot traffic, tree growth and patchwork repairs. When a lawn is more weeds and bare spots than grass, we usually recommend a renovation: kill or remove the old cover, loosen the soil, add topsoil where it has thinned, and hydroseed. It is often far less than replacing the whole yard with sod.
Newer areas: start right
Growth along I-55/I-69 and near Southaven Towne Center and the Tanger Outlets brought new commercial pads and home sites. On those we focus on proper final grading, a few inches of decent topsoil and a hydroseed lawn sown at the right time of year.
Rain spread across the year
Southaven gets nearly 55 inches of precipitation a year. April is the wettest month and August the driest. Spring seeding gets plenty of rain but needs protection on slopes; late-summer seeding needs irrigation.
Storm damage repair
An EF-2 tornado damaged numerous buildings in Southaven on February 5, 2008. After a storm, yards get torn up by debris removal, tree work and roof crews. We repair ruts, regrade and reseed so the lawn recovers.

Southaven Questions
Do you work in Mississippi as well as Tennessee?
Yes. Southaven and the rest of northern DeSoto County are part of our service area.
Is it worth renovating an old lawn instead of sodding it?
For most older yards, a renovation with hydroseed costs much less than sod and gives a good lawn if it is watered properly.
When is the wettest time to avoid seeding slopes?
April is typically the wettest month here. Slopes seeded in spring should get blankets or a heavier mulch.
Can you repair ruts left by tree crews after a storm?
Yes. We regrade, add topsoil where needed and reseed the damaged areas.
